Should the First Lady Get Paid?
Yesterday, President Obama gave a speech here in Denver where he commented that First Ladies don’t get paid. What do you think? Is it an honor or a job to be First Lady?
First Ladies have never gotten paid. In fact, until 1978, there was not even a budget for staff and such for the First Lady. President Jimmy Carter signed public law 95-570 which allowed this to happen. According to the White House website, Mrs. Obama has 14 paid staffers with a total compensation of $1.17 million in salaries.
There are no official government responsibilities for a First Lady. Mostly her obligation are social and she might take on “pet” causes, such as Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. What do you think?

Perhaps the notion of getting “paid” ought to be reconsidered. Take for instance this outstanding, obnoxious waste of tax payer dollars:
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2011/10/michelle-obama-listed-daughters-malia-and-sasha-as-senior-staffers-for-432142-african-trip/
” First lady Michelle Obama’s family trip to South Africa and Botswana in June cost taxpayers well over $424,000, according to new accounting based on Air Force manifests obtained by Judicial Watch, a taxpayer watchdog group.
The use of Air Force aircraft alone for the June 21-27 trip cost $424,142, said the group, and that doesn’t include the food, lodging, and ground transportation for the 21 family and staff members.
The daughters were listed as senior staff.”
One could surmise that there is some monetary benefit to being the first lady cause I don’t know any moms around here that could pull of this sort of thing and get the taxpayers to pay for it.
