School Fees, Donations or Taxes?
I have heard several stories over the last few days about school fees and donation requests. In one case, at Devinny Elementary in JeffCo, the school actually included the “suggested donation“ right on the fee schedule – pre-checked to make it easier! Another PTA in Boulder is soliciting donations to pay for the use of a paraprofessional (including a 10% fee to the district). Another JeffCo parent wonders what a “technology fee” is for, exactly?
What is a parent to do when presented with hundreds of dollars in fees? Certainly no parent wants to see their child’s classroom without needed materials and staff, so perhaps they feel compelled to pay up. This may work in wealthier schools, but certainly not for parents everywhere. And what about the fact that taxpayers have already paid for schools through property taxes and vehicle ownership taxes? How much money is enough?
