Starting September 3, 2012, participating hospitals around New York City will be part of a continuing program from Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Latch On NYC. The program is meant to help encourage new mothers to breastfeed their babies instead of using formula.

In order to make sure it is as difficult as possible for moms to use formula, the 27 area hospitals who are part of this voluntary program will be locking up their formula in a special place and nurses will be required to sign out the formula when a mother or doctor requests this type of feeding for the maternity ward’s babies.

According to the Latch On NYC Press release on NYC.gov website:

“By joining this voluntary initiative for NYC maternity hospitals to support mother’s decision to breastfeed participating hospitals have agreed to:

  • Enforce the NYS hospital regulation to not supplement breastfeeding infants with formula feeding unless medically indicated and documented on the infant’s medical chart;
  • Restrict access to infant formula by hospital staff, tracking infant formula distribution and sharing data on formula distribution with the Health Department;
  • Discontinue the distribution of promotional or free infant formula; and
  • Prohibit the display and distribution of infant formula promotional materials in any hospital location.”
