Constitutional Champions camp is an event that is held during the summer all over the country. The Pikes Peak 912 group, located in Colorado Springs, has undertaken this project for the second year. More and more states and groups all over the country are participating in similar events! I had a friend inform me about it. When I saw the cost and the curriculum I signed my children up immediately! They attended and learned a great deal of our nation’s history in four short days. My children had fun learning and want to go back next year!
On the first day George Washington came to visit. He gave a brief history of his career. The lessons for day one included American flag etiquette, Stamp & Sugar Acts, Boston Tea Party and famous Revolutionary war spies. The day concluded with Ben Franklin explaining the “Join or Die” political cartoon.
The theme of the second day was the Declaration of Independence. The students learned about the history of the fourth amendment, the Battle of Yorktown and Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense.” The day ended with Ben Franklin explaining the “Poor Richard Almanac.” He helped the students examine the problems the colonies faced with King George.
The theme for the third day was the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The children learned the meaning and importance of the first and fourth amendments. They were given lessons in balance of power and freedom of speech.
On the final day the lessons included intellectual property then and now, charity in the time of the founders, inventions of Ben Franklin and a study of what a Republic verses democracy. In learning about some of the founding fathers the students discovered what inspired our leaders and helped them understand reasons behind their actions. The children learned about the founder’s belief in God and natural law.
Throughout the week the students were taught with stories, crafts and games. I know my children had a great time and can’t wait to go back! I would like to see is this program offered in more areas in the Front Range area! It is simple to put together and any group can do it. The curriculum is provided for those who want to undertake this event. One can pick and choose the lessons, crafts and games. Sponsors can be found to help with the cost. If you would like to put together a class for next year, please contact me! Or if you would like more information please visit this website: http://the912-project.com/test/constitutional-champions/.
